The Nepal Film Forum of the Swiss-Nepalese Society, in collaboration with the Songtsen House, presents the following two documentary films:

a)    “Cultural Vignettes of Nepal: Moving Images from the 1950s”

This documentary film (length: 50 minutes; music only), presented by Katrin Hagen, consists of video recordings made by her father Toni Hagen using a 16 mm camera between 1951 and 1955 while he was conducting the geological survey of Nepal. It shows mainly dances of various ethnic groups, such as Chhetri, Newar, Gurung, Limbu, Tibetan, etc. It is a rare footage of the rich Nepali cultural life in that bygone era. Gert-Matthias Wegner of Bhaktapur Music School provided the audio context to the original recordings, which did not have any sound.

b)    “Secrets of Dhaulagiri”

This documentary film (length: 30 minutes; Nepali with English subtitles), directed by Prabesh Subedi and produced by Media Chautari, shows the high Himalayan life with its innumerable ups and downs. It explores lives filled with struggle, tragedies, beliefs and hopes on the foothills of Mt. Dhaulagiri. This film was released in 2011 at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.
