Students enforce indefinite bandh in Sunsari against petro price hike 20.01.12
Various students called the bandh protesting against police “high-handedness” to repress their demonstration program against the hike in fuel price. They said they will not withdraw their strike until the government rolls back its decision to hike the price of petroleum products and students arrested during Thursday’s protest program are released.
Normal life in Sunsari district was badly hit due to the bandh as all shops and businesses in the main market centers including industries and educational institutions remained closed.
Similarly, vehicular movement within the district has also been affected as short-route vehicles stayed off the road completely due to fear of attacks by demonstrators while only few long-route passenger buses were seen to be operational.
Various students unions had shutdown Sunsari district for 1 hour on Thursday against the government’s decision to hike the prices of petroleum products.
They resorted to burning tyres and vandalism to express their displeasure over fuel price hike which they say have added to the financial burden of the general public.
However, police resorted to baton-charge after students’ demonstration turned nasty. Few students were injured while around eight demonstrators were arrested when police tried to disperse the demonstration. nepalnews.com
