61 Nepalis rescued from Libya; 47 still stranded 19.08.10

Sixty-one Nepali migrant workers held hostage by their employer in north African nation Libya have been rescued and brought to Nepal. 47 others are still held hostage in Libya.
21 of them arrived in Nepal on Tuesday and 40 others arrived on Wednesday. The stranded Nepali migrant workers were rescued with joint efforts from Foreign Employment Promotion Board (FEPB), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Nepali embassy in Cairo, Egypt.

The 108 migrant workers, who had gone to Libya three years ago through Dhaulagiri Manpower Company, were held hostage by their employer demanding the money spent for their visas and air-tickets to Libya. The migrant workers have not been paid for their work for up to one year.

Nepal government had initiated probe after the migrant workers wrote to the foreign ministry pleading for rescue in June. Officials from the Nepali embassy in Cairo had conducted a field visit to find the situation of the migrant workers.

The government asked assistance of IOM to rescue the stranded migrant Nepali workers from Libya after the embassy officials reported to the foreign ministry that the workers were held in pitiable condition by their employer.

IOM representatives talked to Libyan authorities to facilitate the release of the Nepali workers. They are still negotiating for the release of 47 other migrant workers. nepalnews.com
